What a great year for the AGA International Aquascaping Contest! 2011 had a record number of entries, nearly doubling our previous best year. We had so many entries that we had to add extra categories, creating even more winners. As a bonus, the nano tanks got their own category this year which they surely deserve.

We also have a new award this year, the “Larry Lampert Most Innovative” award sponsored by Zoo Med Laboratories, Inc., to honor our recently departed friend and AGA President, Larry.

Gratis ADA Aqua Journal! [trail versie]

Well, I just did not like the general feel of the ADA like minimalist display prior, so I tore the entire thing down.

Here, I wanted to add lots of color, contrast, display the nice Manzy wood I have, make it a lot of stem plant and pruning type of tank(yes, work), but somewhat manageable still.

I have enough plants to fill it, but I’ll remove some plants on the sides(Erios and Compact the Crypt parva down some, I have a few small divider pieces of Manzy wood I’ll add this week to make a better dividing line for some of the groups.

I’ll change the groups of plants around till I’m happy(often a long process), to achieve the best contrast based more on Dutch rules, rather than ADA aesthetics. Right now it’s fairly simple red green red green layout, and less textured contrast. Most of these species are easy to sell also, so they are good “crop plants”, 500 or more of the fire cherry shrimp makes it a good shrimp factory.

I have an ADA style tank and my 180 is somewhat loosely based on ADA style, A reef and a Rift cichlid tank. I want a nice style and method for each tank that is different, not all planted tanks with one style.

Tank is not that old after complete tear down, maybe 4 weeks or less.

“2011 AGA Aquascaping Contest”

The “Grüner See” (engl. Green Lake) is situated in upper styria, austria (see geotag). It is amazingly beautiful because of its deep green/blue colour and the surrounding alpine scenery. The lake itself dries up in autumn but fills up with melting water. The water itself of the lake is extremely pure, like glass. The colour is a result of light refraction.

Here’s the poster’s description:
“The night before there seemed to be heavy rain and too much of the pollen were flushed in the water and were floating. So the visibility could be much better, i´ve missed the „crystal clear water. You have to know the Green Lake is famous for its clear water. The good thing for this day was the water level with 9,40m. Spring flowers, plants, benches, hiking trails were below the surface. And i have found out when its the best time during the two to three months “flood” to get in the water – i was to early in this season. Altough the water temperature was between 5 and 6 degrees Celcius i did two dives (85 and 96 minutes long)

My face was well frozen, i can hardly speak afterwards. I hoped this procedure kept my face young and skintight. After watching the footage it seemed to be different.”
