Q) Could you give me some know-how on how to make an aquatic plant layout be at
its optimal condition at a specific time?

A) The biggest problem is the difference in the growing rates of aquatic plants.
Without even mentioning foreground plants and ferns, the growing rate varies
even among stem plant species. The most important thing is to identify the most
slow-growing plants and carry out trimming according to the growing speed of
such slow-growing plants identified. Avoid trimming all the plants to the same
height but remember to trim fast-growing plants shorter and slow-growing ones
longer. By trimming in this fashion, all the plants will eventually grow to the
same height. You need a certain amount of experience to acquire the technique
to calculate the remaining time and adjust the trimming level accordingly, but
this is an essential skill for professionals. Even in contests, I often see
some works which have a problem with imbalanced plant heights.

Hello! Sushi is one of the most famous Japanese cuisines, and Japanese people
are known as fish-lovers. Yesterday, July 21st was the day called “Doyo ushi no
hi,” a day in late July dedicated to eating eel (unagi). It may sound a bit
strange if you are not used to eating eel, but its rich nutrition is thought to
ease the summer fatigue. Eel was sold in a large space in every supermarket
yesterday, and a lot of people enjoyed it. In your country, do you have such
unique customs as well? If you are participating to the Nature Aquarium party,
you can not only enjoy the party and meeting other hobbyists, but also get in
touch with the unique culture and tasty cuisines well!

Q) I use an UV sterilization lamp when blue-green algae have grown. Is this
measure effective even when a green water problem occurs?

A) The use of a sterilization lamp is effective in the case of turbidity caused
by biological problems such as clouding and green water. However, it cannot be
said that turning on the UV sterilization lamp is good all the time. From my
experience, if new fish are added to a tank with the sterilization lamp always
turned on, the fish easily get sick if those fish are germ or bacteria carriers.
This may be because constant use of the sterilization lamp lowers the
resistance of the fish. As for the growing of aquatic plants, the use of the
sterilization lamp oxidizes the bivalent and it thus loses its effectiveness in
improving the red hue of reddish plants. For this reason, the effect of ECA is
reduced if it is added to a tank with the sterilization lamp always turned on.

Q) In my aquarium, I sometimes find dead Cardina japonica in the morning.
What do you think is the cause?

A) Lack of oxygen is suspected unless that particular Cardina japonica was weak.
Aquatic plants perform photosynthesis during the day in the presence of light
and CO2, and respire during the night without carrying out any photosynthesis.
Haven’t you ever observed slightly clouded tank water or fast-moving gills of
fish in the morning? These symptoms are seen more frequently on a tank with
densely grown aquatic plants, and you need to pay extra attention if a large
amount of stem plants has grown all over the tank. You are advised to do
aeration using Lily Pipe or an air pump after turning off the aquarium
lighting. In addition, a decline in dissolved oxygen level during the night
leads to a shortage of oxygen in the filter and affects the microbiota. This
may create problems of imbalanced aquariums, which may cause algae to bloom.
