APLC has become one of the largest, and definitely, most prestigious planted
aquarium layout contests in the world.  We’re very excited to organize its 13th
contest, this year.  The closing date for all contest entries is approaching;
it’s on May 31, 2013 (JST)!!

[ADA View] First anniversary for the world’s largest Nature Aquarium layouts.

The Sumida Aquarium, located inside the Tokyo Sky Tree Town, will have its first
anniversary on May 22.  Since its grand opening, ADA’s 4m- and 7m-Nature
Aquarium layouts have been welcoming all the aquarium fans and visitors into
the building.  The creation of the world’s largest Nature Aquarium layouts was
perceived as sensational news in the aquarium industry because nobody had ever
tried before.  These two “living aquascapes”, established with well-functioning
ecosystem, are now the main attractions of the aquarium.

We’d like to celebrate the first anniversary of their creation, and take a look
back their transformation in the past year.  A series of video clips featuring
the creation process of the layouts and follow-up videos are available on

[Know-How] An advice for better CO2 dissolution in aquarium water.
——————————————————————————–

Q)
The bubbles of injected CO2 usually go up towards the water surface. However,
I can see these bubbles circulating throughout the aquarium if water flow is
injected towards them. Could you tell me which leads to better dissolution of
CO2 in water?

A)
Tiny CO2 bubbles from Pollen Glass gradually dissolve in water while they are
floating towards the water surface. If you closely look at CO2 bubbles near the
water surface, you can find that they have become smaller as a result of
dissolution. As for water injection, the CO2 bubbles can dissolve more in water
if they float longer in the injected water flow. In view of this, injecting
water towards CO2 bubbles can be construed as an innovative idea for efficient
CO2 injection. For your information, Pollen Glass is designed to provide an
adequate CO2 diffusion efficiency if it is installed at the middle level of the
tank height, the optimal, balanced position, and the CO2 injection amount is
appropriate.

ADA’s digital catalog completely covers Nature Aquarium Goods and Do! Aqua
products, including newly released AQUASKY series, Super Jet Filter ES-300 and
the 2013 model year tools.  Product information and images of new products will
be uploaded to the catalog as they are introduced to the market.  We will keep
you updated on the latest product lineups through this weekly newsletter and
the new digital catalog.

ADA online catalog is available in PDF and eBook formats through ADA’s official
website.  You can also check out the catalog by downloading the application to
your iPad. Jumping back and forth between the pages becomes incredibly easy, and
it also provides product videos.  What’s more is that we will add supplemental
volumes, such as Nature Aquarium concept booklet, product pamphlet etc., to the
iPad and Android application.  ADA will also release the online catalog in the

The control and removal of algae is certainly one of the serious issues we have
to deal with when taking care of planted aquariums.  There are many different
types of algae; each type has its own growth pattern and requires a special
attention using the most suitable method of removal.

-Green algae on glass surfaces

They are most commonly seen on the inside walls of aquarium tanks.  Green algae
develop during the initial installation period of an aquarium as well as on the
glass surface and white diffusion filter of POLLEN GLASS in a mature aquarium.

Remove the algae growing on aquarium tank walls with a PRO RAZOR, and then
change the aquarium water.  When you use a Pro Razor near the substrate area of
the layout, be cautious not to let sand get in between the blade and the glass
surface.  Otherwise the sand scratches the glass surface and leave ugly scratch
marks as you move the blade.
You can remove green algae accumulated on the diffusion filter of a POLLEN GLASS
with SUPERGE, ADA’s glassware cleaning agent.

- Beard algae on Anubias

Slow-growing aquatic plants are more vulnerable to the algae problem than the
fast growing kinds.  A group of plants in the Anubias family is a good example.
When diatom algae, which are often seen on Anubias’ leaf surfaces during the
initial aquarium installation period, are not removed properly, green algae
may start spreading over the diatom algae.  In case a large amount of beard
algae grows around leaf margins of Anubias, apply dilute PHYTON-GIT solution
using a painting brush.
*Do NOT apply PHYTON-GIT to any other aquatic plants.

- Black beard algae on layout stones and driftwood

Black and tough beard-like algae growing on stones and driftwood can be seen
in the aquarium with a high nitrate level.  Please pay close attention and
take care of them before they become unmanageable.
After scraping off algae with PRO-PICKER, release Siamese Flying Fox and
Caridina japonica in the aquarium.  If the condition is critical, remove
water from the aquarium, and cover the affected area of stones / driftwood
with a paper towel, soaked with several drops of PHYTON-GIT, overnight.
Then, fill the aquarium with water in a usual manner.

- Foul smelling blue-green algae covering over the undergrowth

They are considered as a type of Cyanobacteria, easily caused by excess
nutrients in the aquarium water.  They are also found in places, such as
densely-growing undergrowth of aquatic plants, where water flow hardly passes
through.  If you see them in your planted aquarium, you must act quickly as
they spread over so fast!
Suck out blue-green algae using a small hose, and sprinkle BACTER 100 over
the area.  Then release some Black Molly in the aquarium.

If you experience an outbreak of algae in your aquarium, you might be
over-feeding your fish.  Uneaten, left over fish food is an excellent food
source for algae growth because it causes excess nutrients in the water.
Watch fish carefully every time you feed them and adjust their servings.
Uneaten food should be removed from the aquarium after each feeding session
to minimize water contamination.  With ADA’s AP GLASS and FOOD GLASS, you can
easily adjust feeding amount in a clean, fun way!

[Know-How] Algae control using invertebrates

Q: ADA recommends the use of Caridina japonica (Yamato Numa Ebi), Otocinclus and
Siamese Flying Fox for algae control. Why doesn’t ADA use shellfish?

A: Many aquarium shops sell Clithon retropictus. It eats and removes algae on
the stones and driftwood, even in the places that are hardly reachable with a
brush such as grooves and dents on the stone surface. Nevertheless it is seldom
used in Nature Aquarium because it lays small white eggs on the stones, which
are hard to remove and also unsightly.  Other species of shellfish that grow
easily in the tank may spoil the beautiful landscape if there are too many
young shells within the tank.  For these reasons, ADA recommends the use of
Caridina japonica (Yamato Numa Ebi), Otocinclus and Siamese Flying Fox for
algae control.

ADA Poland is going to present a live event, “Hardscape Day”, in their
headquarters / gallery, this coming Saturday on March 2.  One of the amazing
aspects of Nature Aquarium is the layout materials such as driftwood and stones
which give the layout a distinctive characteristic with their unique textures
and shapes.  You can create a variety of different types of layout compositions
depending on the arrangement of driftwood and stones.  But, do you know how
much layout materials you would need for arranging a nice planted aquarium
layout?
“Hardscape Day” will teach you the idea of what the adequate amount of layout
materials should be and how to estimate it before purchasing too many stones or
other materials.  The professional aquascapers will create a variety of layout
styles, such as Iwagumi and Ryuboku layouts, in a classic size ADA Cube Garden.

Aqua Design Amano Deutschland GmbH, German distributor of ADA Nature Aquarium
Goods is scheduling to organize planted aquarium seminars by having Mr. Adrie
Baumann as a lecturer. Mr. Baumann is a well know German aquascaper, and his
planted aquarium layouts were highly evaluated in the Art of the Planted
Aquarium aquascaping contest. ADA Deutschland will have two seminars in the

• platte schroevendraaier om de clips te verwijderen
• eventueel kleine dopsleutel (5,5) voor de kleine moertjes

Als eerste moet je de 4 bovenste clips los halen. Dit kan makkelijk door ze met een schroevendraaier los te wippen.

Om het deksel te openen moet je met een platte schroevendraaier de plastic clips induwen.

In de bovenkant zit vervolgens het te vervangen onderdeel (board en display). De stekker is makkelijk los te koppelen met de hand. Daarna dienen de 4 moertjes en 2 schroeven los gedraaid te worden om board en display te verwijderen.

Hierna kan het nieuwe onderdeel geplaatst worden.

Nadat alles weer is aangesloten en gemonteerd heb je een goed werkend display.
